<h3>
<b>Braids and senegalese twists:</b></h3>
<div>
Even though braids are not fully protective as your ends are not covered, they are considered a low manipulation style. The lack of a need to comb, brush, pull, tug and otherwise manipulate the hair helps prevent the ends from being ripped, drying out and ultimately breaking off. <br />

<b>Wigs and Weaves:</b></h3>

<br />
We've heard about a host of the growth aids that are out there. The oral supplements (msm, biotin, hairfinity), topical options (Castor oil, essential oils like rosemary, lavender and sage), exercising, increasing your water intake, scalp massages etc. Well, just when you thought you knew it all, here comes another way to speed up hair growth: The inversion method.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div>
As part of my fitness journey I took up yoga classes. Last week, we attempted a hand stand (Lets not go into how woeful my attempt was) and as is typical when a new pose is introduced, my instructor reeled out a list of benefits of the hand stand including its ability to increase hair growth by up to 1 inch in a week! Wait. What? Of course, this piqued my interest, so I got home and promptly started my research.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
Here is how it works:<br />
<br />
- Heat up a little bit of your preferred hair oil: Lots of people have had good results with olive, coconut or castor oil<br />
<br />
- Apply to your scalp and massage for 2 mins<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlS8lAZfvAhHNjtUND6MEXHlggtgwDPKHQIh-TPLJvHaB-8PpUjlvfcdV65RpVkScuXAlfm-Vslw9xFbJkwKbxH-R3iNjGrLUj9lDFdBzTeqM7UjM2yStl7LXFx19O0zL3rluJ3TldoTnW/s1600/ArticleHeader23.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlS8lAZfvAhHNjtUND6MEXHlggtgwDPKHQIh-TPLJvHaB-8PpUjlvfcdV65RpVkScuXAlfm-Vslw9xFbJkwKbxH-R3iNjGrLUj9lDFdBzTeqM7UjM2yStl7LXFx19O0zL3rluJ3TldoTnW/s1600/ArticleHeader23.jpg" height="259" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Massage the oil into your scalp for 2 mins</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
- Stand or sit in a position that inverts your head for 4 mins.<br />
<br />
You can bend forward over your kitchen sink, stand in a down ward facing dog position, seat on the edge of a chair and bend forward... Whatever is most comfortable for you. Bearing in mind that you have to hold the position for 4 mins.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDfYR54q_igOAUu5ZTAG1HogCn8-lf1mw7hlVoZDbRpt24rJ_5P9JYf_Ngpxu2-SykwZiqZbnOAs6NDDyFdB6o6Lmw5QXfyeJ577ssJ00RX4aIMrc8ThfZZ_pYACBAUmXHYCPjDeM4L8eB/s1600/Invert-Your-head.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDfYR54q_igOAUu5ZTAG1HogCn8-lf1mw7hlVoZDbRpt24rJ_5P9JYf_Ngpxu2-SykwZiqZbnOAs6NDDyFdB6o6Lmw5QXfyeJ577ssJ00RX4aIMrc8ThfZZ_pYACBAUmXHYCPjDeM4L8eB/s1600/Invert-Your-head.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Stay in an inverted position for 4 minutes</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
- When straightening up make sure to do so slowly to avoid feeling light headed or dizzy.<br />
<br />
- Repeat once a day for 7 days<br />
<br />
<b>Additional info:</b><br />
- The inversion method works by increasing blood circulation to the head and scalp which results in the availability of more nutrients to the follicles thereby stimulating growth<br />
<br />
- Wait 3 weeks between each inversion period to prevent your body from getting used to the increased circulation as this will decrease your results.<br />
<br />

I big chopped!My initial plan was to transition for 2 years. I got to15 months and just couldn't deal with the two textures any more. So this morning, I grabbed a pair of scissors, stood in front of my bathroom mirror and chopped off the relaxed hair! I am now fully natural and loving it... I think.<br />

<br />
I know it's been a while. In fact, I think this is my first post of the year (not good)... so happy new year! I hope you are doing well, staving off those hair journey set backs and seeing some length :)<br />
<br />
Sooo like the subject says: <b>I am transitioning to natural</b>. For a number of reasons but primarily because in addition to the fact that I am just plain tired of getting these relaxers I have over the years come to appreciate the aesthetics and versatility of natural hair. The texture, volume, ability to wear both straight styles and natural hair styles, the elasticity and general health. I haven't been natural since I was 16 and I'm really eager to experience and explore my natural texture.<br />
<br />
My last relaxer was in february last year so I'm now 15 months post relaxer. I already 'trimmed' about 6 inches off thanks to damage I experienced due to the viciousness that was this winter's 'Arctic vortex'! Granted I was a bit negligent however, I tend to go through periods of negligence where I am not moisturizing my hair as frequently as I should and while I got away with it in Nigeria, apparently, the Canadian winter is no where near as tolerant. #lessonlearned<br />
<br />
Being that I am just not a short hair person, my initial plan was to transition for 2 years and gradually trim off the relaxed hair but I'm currently at 7 inches of new growth, tired of dealing with the two textures and just about ready to big chop!<br />
<br />

I plan to 'big chop' (is it still a big chop if you transition for a year??) this weekend! This is about to be the beginning of a whole 'nother hair journey to waist length...<br />

Ways to wear a teeny weeny 'fro (twa)/low cutWhen dealing with damaged hair, sometimes, it is best to start afresh... from the beginning. I have received a number of emails from women who tired of trying to mask and hide breakage decided to cut it all off and start again. While cutting your hair short can be scary for some, a lot of women have found it to be quite liberating. For those who for whatever reason have decided to take the plunge here are a few ways to rock a twa... Starting with the infinitely beautiful Lupita Nyong'o<br />

In the former the cold dry winter is fast approaching and in the latter, the harmattan winds are slowly but surely making way to your shores! These seasons are characterized by dryness that can wreak havoc on your tresses. You haven't retained your length all these months to have your hair dry out and break off due to the weather. Here are 5 ways to help your hair beat the dryness:<br />
<br />
- Deep condition<br />
Be sure to deep condition your hair once a week during this season. Deep conditioning helps retain <br />
water within the shaft of your hair where it is most needed to keep the hair supple and less likely to snap when manipulated.<br />
<br />
- Moisturize and seal<br />
Moisturizing and sealing is crucial. The harmattan winds will dry out your hair<br />
in a matter of minutes if you do not properly seal in your moisture with an oil. Every night<br />
I use a spray bottle to slightly dampen my hair, apply some moisturizer (currently using Qhemets biologics amla and olive cream) then seal with olive oil.<br />
<br />
- Protect<br />
Protecting your hair will limit exposure to the dry weather and reduce manipulation<br />
which is a key cause of breakage. I would typically wear my hair in a bun, flat twists<br />
or a wig. At night, I tie my head in a silk/satin scarf before going to bed.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJBR65OOg_Wj066JlSt8P3nZmPFPA2zrJgYVXip3OvVISLxJOQnNSG7b6ql6g47zhn6ZgJwJ04YffegqZVpDBeXZiyDM9H_M0MWPZ1fbtn40VRLup67IUx9JXMKuUC7zeF5TtnUH3WJJcL/s1600/1453265_10153441521515094_1995678200_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJBR65OOg_Wj066JlSt8P3nZmPFPA2zrJgYVXip3OvVISLxJOQnNSG7b6ql6g47zhn6ZgJwJ04YffegqZVpDBeXZiyDM9H_M0MWPZ1fbtn40VRLup67IUx9JXMKuUC7zeF5TtnUH3WJJcL/s320/1453265_10153441521515094_1995678200_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My sister and I protective styling with flat twists</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
- Diet<br />
Incorporate seafood, nuts, beans, poultry and green veggies in your diet to ensure your body is getting all the nutrients it needs to create strong healthy strands.<br />
<br />
- TLC when manipulating<br />
When manipulating your hair whether combing, twisting, washing etc be sure to treat your hair like you will treat a fine silk blouse. Use a wide tooth comb and make sure to detangle gently.<br />
<br />
Goodluck getting through 'battle' season. Have you winter/harmattan proofed your regimen? What changes will you be making to your regimen this season?<br />

Get some summer hair inspiration from these celebs:</span><br />
<h3>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />Trend #1 - Plaits: Messy braids and flat twists</span></h3>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">This summer, stave away the heat by putting your hair up in casual but stylish plaits. Kourtney Kardashian and Nicole Ritchie have theirs up in braided updos while beyonce wears hers in a long and loose side braid</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
Trend #2 - The undercut</span></h3>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Get an undercut to add style and edginess to your look. Below Rihanna,
Rosario Dawson and Cassie show you how to rock an undercut. Afraid of the commitment? Fake it with a deep side part (Trend #3)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
Trend #3 - Deep side part</span></h3>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The
deep side part is a less extreme take on the undercut. Khloe
Kardashian combines 2 trends (plaits and an extreme part) for a
flawless finish. Beyonce adds emphasis with color and voluminous
curls and Kerry Washington keeps it smooth and sleek in a low bun.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Rocking the Ombre hair trend is a great way to go lighter this summer. Try Ciara's high contrast ombre look or go for more subtle transitions like Kelly Rowland and Lala Vasquez</span><br />

<br />
Postpartum hair loss...Some of you may have experienced this. While you were pregnant, your hair was thick, luscious, beautiful. Then, your bundle of joy arrived and all that beautiful thick hair went down the drain... literarily. Your hair started coming out in clumps, you started seeing thinning areas, bald patches. You are not the alone, according to the APA reports, postpartum hair loss occurs in 40 to 50% of women.<br />
<br />
What causes postpartum hair loss:<br />
Hair has 3 stages of growth. The first phase is the growth phase, where your hair is actually growing and increasing in length. The second phase is the catagen phase, this is the transitional phase where the hair follicle begins to shrink. The last phase is the resting phase, in this phase the hair stops growing and remains at the same length. This resting strand is eventually pushed out as a new strand starts to grow out resulting in normal 'shedding'. During pregnancy, high oestrogen levels cause more strands to stay in the anagen phase (growth phase) as a result you have significantly less shedding than normal and beautiful, thick hair. But of course, all good things must come to an end, when you eventually give birth and your oestrogen levels drop, the hairs that were in a prolonged anagen stage begin to fall out resulting in the 'excessive' shedding known as postpartum hair loss.<br />
<br />
How Long does it last:<br />
Postpartum hair loss starts from about 3 months after child birth and can last for anywhere from 2 to 12 months.<br />
<br />
How to prevent postpartum hair loss:<br />
Postpartum hair loss varies from person to person and even with the same person, it varies from pregnancy to pregnancy. There is no way to prevent it. However, taking prenatal vitamins, garlic supplements and biotin supplements which promote hair growth and healthy follicles may help. Avoid styles that put a lot of tension on your scalp, this could aggravate the problem. Get creative and opt for styles that make the problem less noticeable.<br />
<br />
Will your hair ever grow back?<br />
Yes, postpartum hair loss is temporary. By the time it's time to celebrate your child's first birthday your hair should be back to its pre pregnancy state. If you are experiencing postpartum hairloss for an extended period of time, see your doctor. Get tested for postpartum thyroiditis: A thyroid problem that often occurs after pregnancy which may among other things cause excessive hair loss in women.<br />

<br />
For most of us, it can be difficult to deal with hairloss along with all the other changes that come with pregnancy. However, just hang in there and give your body time to do what it does and recover from the total body experience that is pregnancy.<br />
<br />
What has your experience been with postpartum hair loss? Are you one of the lucky 50 to 60 percent who don't experience this? If you aren't, how did you cope with it and how long did it last? Tell us in the comments below.<br />

When on a healthy hair journey, relaxer day is one of the most nerve racking days. One bad relaxer can set you back weeks, months or even years! So it is important to proceed with caution.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Most relaxers contain either of these 2 active ingredients: Sodium hydroxide (Lye) or Calcium hydroxide (No lye). Lye relaxers usually come in a jar and don't require any mixing while no lye relaxers usually come in a kit with the relaxer, activator and other accessories. Both active ingredients work by breaking down the bonds of the hair. The key difference is the effect on the hair and scalp.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Lye relaxers:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSlPsKT8WpdO1_usPdzlzEYXEcXO6c51PjcJh-0gqXhQmH8ms8k-K8EXCtXTHJG8zIVpe8CUOkjQiOefTjg6bJfApximcdpzco8EFEu9B3njslJtoFVfKN7LQlssLIJK7S4tETbGVABufu/s1600/Mizani-Lye-Relaxer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSlPsKT8WpdO1_usPdzlzEYXEcXO6c51PjcJh-0gqXhQmH8ms8k-K8EXCtXTHJG8zIVpe8CUOkjQiOefTjg6bJfApximcdpzco8EFEu9B3njslJtoFVfKN7LQlssLIJK7S4tETbGVABufu/s1600/Mizani-Lye-Relaxer.jpg" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Lye relaxers can be quite harsh on the scalp so if your scalp is sensitive, this may not be the best option for you. They also tend to process the hair faster which is great because it means that you don't have to leave the relaxer on as long as you would a no lye relaxer to get the same results. The major advantage of lye relaxers is the fact that it is much gentler on your hair than no lye relaxers. You hair is better able to absorb and retain moisture when you use a lye relaxer and is therefore healthier, stronger and less likely to break.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">No Lye relaxers:</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">No lye relaxers have calcium hydroxide as the active ingredient. They are gentler on the scalp than lye relaxers but significantly harsher on the hair. No lye relaxers leave calcium deposits on the hair which prevents your hair from absorbing and retaining moisture properly. This leaves your hair dry and susceptible to breakage. To combat this, use a good clarifying shampoo regularly if you relax with a no lye relaxer. The clarifying shampoo will help remove the calcium buildup. However, in the process of removing the calcium deposits, it also strips and removes other nutrients from your hair so be sure to replenish by deep conditioning after clarifying.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">As is often the case with hair care, there isn't a generic right or wrong answer to the question of whether to use lye or no lye. It really just boils down to the individual. The sensitivity of your scalp, how well your hair takes to relaxers, what your preferred outcome is (bone straight or texlaxed) etc.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I prefer to use a lye relaxer because even though my scalp is sensitive, I like to under process my hair (texlax). So I typically wash off the relaxer immediately after applying (and before it has had a chance to wreak havoc on my scalp). This way, I don't have any burns or irritation from using a lye relaxer, I avoid overprocessing my hair and I also avoid having to deal with dryness from the no lye relaxer.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Since we are talking relaxers, I'll leave you with these quick tips on how to ensure that relaxer day goes smoothly:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">- Do not over lap relaxers (apply ONLY to new growth)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">- It is okay to change relaxers (as far as your adher to #1 above) but once you find one that you like, it is recommended that you stick to it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">- Always make sure your hair is well detangled before relaxing</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">- Always wait at least a week after washing to relax your hair.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<br />
Back in February I had a major setback due to neglect and relaxer burns which I discussed <a href="http://lushstrands.blogspot.com/2013/02/hair-update-harmattanwinter.html" target="_blank">here</a>. Since this setback I have been protective styling. This weekend, I finally braved it and decided to assess the damage and get a good trim so I went to Salon Tamika Bell. Tamika Bell is not your average stylist. She focuses on healthy hair makeovers, she spent a good hour just detangling my hair! She deep conditioned, blow dried and flat ironed... and I fell asleep! Now, that is trust. I NEVER fall asleep in a stylist's chair. I am usually awake, alert and ready to sprint out of the chair if I suspect any foul play! Anyway, when she was done, she combed down my hair and informed me that I was at tailbone length! Woo hoo! But not for long, the damage from my last relaxer was apparent in how thin my ends were. So she cut off about 4 inches. I definitely need to cut off more but we decided to do it gradually.<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
With children's day right around the corner, I thought a post on how to care for our little ones' hair would be in order. Here goes:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLuwVncmM_jX_heIxAK8PGw5wThv5wutc_3Hb-aLg5Q9O4U6NjoNfLdhIZLM4UnCIEDZcjvMM6cQuAIF-XlIphyphenhyphenarHvFMuE2oWbRHmw7Uk9xrle9ZHtUWChGnnu_Ygr6G1_uwhGxNZ43Np/s1600/262554_493712667363544_1684031241_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLuwVncmM_jX_heIxAK8PGw5wThv5wutc_3Hb-aLg5Q9O4U6NjoNfLdhIZLM4UnCIEDZcjvMM6cQuAIF-XlIphyphenhyphenarHvFMuE2oWbRHmw7Uk9xrle9ZHtUWChGnnu_Ygr6G1_uwhGxNZ43Np/s320/262554_493712667363544_1684031241_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
1. Cleansing:<br />
Depending on your lifestyle and the length and thickness of your daughters hair, you should plan to wash their hair once every week or two. When washing, focus on cleaning the scalp. The hair will get cleaned as the shampoo runs down the shaft when being rinsed out.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghNifuLfcrnVHb1Ivanb3Lqm3d62NLHPwrfHrZlKwqIENo7ppCJ6m5xNaeVQdtUSI1vPViFegBkWdvQCxHX6xIXKv6mNIZzXabU-ZXrPOXnFoDEc22Ww7C7Jz_CR2RDqpjGNXllmudti-8/s1600/natural-hair-girl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghNifuLfcrnVHb1Ivanb3Lqm3d62NLHPwrfHrZlKwqIENo7ppCJ6m5xNaeVQdtUSI1vPViFegBkWdvQCxHX6xIXKv6mNIZzXabU-ZXrPOXnFoDEc22Ww7C7Jz_CR2RDqpjGNXllmudti-8/s320/natural-hair-girl.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Photo: thelondonmummyblog.com</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
2. Conditioning:<br />
Please do not skip this step and for those of you who have someone else wash and condition your kids' hair be sure to insist that this step is NOT skipped (I am stressing this because ALOT of kid hair braiders in Lagos do not understand the importance of conditioning!). Insist also that conditioner is applied lavishly not sparingly. This will help retain moisture and aid the next step: Detangling.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvgbKcDM5CJC4YdGX9AcDkK0HUsXjbTu1ecwl0FeMxAgvEwkw6umpEHHlbK9dDmGlnpsT-X4iKK8iJyM7SI1SI0_6cAAVWNsgL3gMPwRV9AqllYNVHS9aD536_fZ3hhMPcHmkIvFMB69dH/s1600/natural-hair-washing.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvgbKcDM5CJC4YdGX9AcDkK0HUsXjbTu1ecwl0FeMxAgvEwkw6umpEHHlbK9dDmGlnpsT-X4iKK8iJyM7SI1SI0_6cAAVWNsgL3gMPwRV9AqllYNVHS9aD536_fZ3hhMPcHmkIvFMB69dH/s320/natural-hair-washing.jpg" width="257" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
3. Detangle:<br />
This is the step that is dreaded by lots of kids. The pulling, tugging, yanking etc. However, with the right products (moisturizing and detangling conditioner), the right technique (detangling in sections while saturated with conditioner) and the right tools (wide tooth comb, detangling brush) this step can be a lot easier that is often anticipated.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMWhmgNSdsjKXxuvhC2WOF_mqTIUpJ16GVktDHVgRlJHe451QJDP2j1wT90sYZqBkBmWZvKFJupTxnsE1Aq7rXkk5EGeo6X8z0EPa2nNHF74OFs7wylgsjqw9R274loKs3WvOPAzOLh4bh/s1600/detangling2-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMWhmgNSdsjKXxuvhC2WOF_mqTIUpJ16GVktDHVgRlJHe451QJDP2j1wT90sYZqBkBmWZvKFJupTxnsE1Aq7rXkk5EGeo6X8z0EPa2nNHF74OFs7wylgsjqw9R274loKs3WvOPAzOLh4bh/s320/detangling2-1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
4. Styling:<br />
Most mums opt for protective/low manipulation styles like twists, cornrows, buns etc for kids. This option is a lot easier on kids and parents as they do not have to deal with styling on a daily basis plus there are lots of cute styles to try out on your little one. It is also a good way to reduce manipulation and promote length retention.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
5. Moisturizing:<br />
This will not be a hair care post without me stressing the importance of moisturizing. Moisturize 3 to 5 times a week by lightly misting the hair with your favorite water based moisturizer. you can use a mixture of water and glycerin, water and aloe vera juice, a water based leave in conditioner, just water etc Apply some olive or coconut oil afterwards to seal in the moisture.<br />
<br />

It breaks my heart to see kids with damaged hairlines. Follow these steps to prevent this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Do not braid or cornrow too tight, too small or too heavy. Caution your daughters braider <b>very strongly</b> about this. Note that the effects of braiding hair too tight can be irreversible so it is IMPORTANT that we get this right!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Do not brush edges aggressively. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Manipulate and detangle gently</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Moisturize. Remember that dry hair is brittle and more prone to breakage.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And lastly, I'll leave you with pictures of cutie pattooties from around the globe:</div>

This week, I am back to wigs. I usually stick to blacks and dark browns but this time, I decided to try something new. So I went lighter: dark blonde with highlights! As usual my hair is cornrowed underneath the wig. I moisturize and seal daily. Apply the jbco on my edges. Game on.<br />

<br /></div>
The most asked question I get is "How do I fix a receding hairline?" So naturally, I thought this should be my next post:<br />
<br />
First off, what causes the hairline to recede? Here are the top 6 reasons:<br />
- Vigorous combing/brushing<br />
- Braids that are too small, too tight or too heavy<br />
- Improper application and removal of glued in lace wigs<br />
- Improper application and removal of glued in weaves<br />
- Excessive relaxing<br />
- Friction against your pillow while sleeping<br />
<br />
7 ways to get your hairline back:<br />
There are extreme cases of hairline damage where you have to see a doctor to get regular shots or even surgery. For milder cases, here are a few things that you can do to improve your hairline:<br />
<br />
<br />
1. <b>STOP brushing your hairline</b>. I mean, do you really really need to exert all that effort when brushing your edges? I understand that you want your hair to lay flat but if you insist on smooth/flat edges, do it GENTLY, those strands are fragile and so is the scalp in that area. Infact, here is a challenge for you: Don't brush or comb your edges at all. Use your fingers, detangle your hair and smooth it back with some edge control.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNxOeti7OLCdi093Tya8BxosqIhqK5yMpFW0Iy_A6STjiFIR3OWtY3tgN_PLIVh2gTwjiLoFaM7Fzw3ij4BPfB_bWP9tAl2KrttYulgX93THrtrRt-rhuCjkqsfKGvS6rQNkjp6D8f7FAD/s1600/hair-breakage2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNxOeti7OLCdi093Tya8BxosqIhqK5yMpFW0Iy_A6STjiFIR3OWtY3tgN_PLIVh2gTwjiLoFaM7Fzw3ij4BPfB_bWP9tAl2KrttYulgX93THrtrRt-rhuCjkqsfKGvS6rQNkjp6D8f7FAD/s320/hair-breakage2.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Give your edges a break from brushing (pun intended :)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
2.<b> Make sure your braids/weaving/cornrows are not too tight</b>. Make sure they are not too heavy and make sure they are not too small. Too tight and/or too heavy braids will cause trauma to the hair follicle making it incapable of producing hair. Small braids are not really an issue except for the fact that people tend to leave them in for too long and with all the movement, the braids sometimes start to twist at the base, create tension and fall off. So if you must put your hair in small braids either don't leave them in for too long or redo the edges once they start to twist.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5x-6xvS0o8cZYhEXEkLLHVWZxYbpGTwi1FJF3DneyhbAm_oD1f_yAm3BZlGTzlILmJ_iRNMG56Y0FV2q_RxG-QCADJb4ZmghQp-SYH2mAdMLXAGPX7J3I6O81w4oTznRiyPRNgDI-p2ji/s1600/tightbraids1.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="188" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5x-6xvS0o8cZYhEXEkLLHVWZxYbpGTwi1FJF3DneyhbAm_oD1f_yAm3BZlGTzlILmJ_iRNMG56Y0FV2q_RxG-QCADJb4ZmghQp-SYH2mAdMLXAGPX7J3I6O81w4oTznRiyPRNgDI-p2ji/s400/tightbraids1.gif" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">If you have to take pain killers after doing your hair, it is too tight.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTP2tqnKuZSUcAV3yogzXtVgBaP0qYEvej5cn8cR5hv0lTqRYqBjSNfBMIj6VQ9ywvNj9wcIoI35khyfLfWFOpcJTZNglqUoh_jPwdKbwKoWDxOsft6T3UKjk0z5lJNTif9LCnMuaRPenY/s1600/ghana+weaving.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="250" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTP2tqnKuZSUcAV3yogzXtVgBaP0qYEvej5cn8cR5hv0lTqRYqBjSNfBMIj6VQ9ywvNj9wcIoI35khyfLfWFOpcJTZNglqUoh_jPwdKbwKoWDxOsft6T3UKjk0z5lJNTif9LCnMuaRPenY/s400/ghana+weaving.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I love Ghana weaving as much as you but tell your hairdresser to go easy. She mustn't pick every single strand of hair that is in the area. Ask her to be gentle especially around the hairline</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
3. <b>Do not glue on lace wigs.</b> If you must wear a wig, use glueless ones. If you must apply your wig with glue, make sure it is applied in front of the hairline, not behind or on your hairline. In any case, the effect of glue on your skin is not properly researched so I definitely recommend skipping the glue applications all together<br />
<br />
4. <b>Do not glue in your weaves</b>. It's difficult to care for your hair when you have a glued in weave and also difficult to take out without causing damage. Opt for a sew in instead<br />
<br />
5. <b>Stop relaxing your edges.</b> Ok, maybe I will lose some of you here but this is what saved my edges o. After relaxing my hair, my edges always looked extremely thin and lifeless. So I stopped. Now, when I relax my hair, I start from about half an inch behind my hair line. So yes, the first half inch of my hairline is coarse and nappy but when I want it to lay flat, I just get some edge control, apply to my edges and smooth it down.<br />
<br />

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6. <b>Sleep with a silk or satin scarf.</b> If you don't want to sleep with a silk/satin scarf then use silk or satin pillow cases. When you sleep at night, you hair rubs against your pillow and can break due to friction. Silk and satin are slippery and create a lot less friction than cotton. So tying your hair in a scarf made from one of these will prevent friction related breakage in your hairline.<br />

<br />
Some of you may have taken out your protective style and have seen some new growth. Your hair has grown and you can't wait to touch up so that you can really see the length. Well, growing is the easy part, hair always grows. Retouching on the other hand, that's the difficult part. improper relaxing is the No 1 cause of setbacks with women trying to grow their hair out. So getting this process right is critical.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiucI-0CP3a7UgK75QQCGMpEbcN1DZWif18JuRx5PTjGumQtyUOK9GzUMevfVJ3jO_LAslyLx3ajMsSwkel4pN0GrLJ9FiEIMJv2evl2En1TGe_i6W4dD6jqhes95XcxPTm7YG1xVbU52c7/s1600/retention2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiucI-0CP3a7UgK75QQCGMpEbcN1DZWif18JuRx5PTjGumQtyUOK9GzUMevfVJ3jO_LAslyLx3ajMsSwkel4pN0GrLJ9FiEIMJv2evl2En1TGe_i6W4dD6jqhes95XcxPTm7YG1xVbU52c7/s320/retention2.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
In a lot of cases, you experience so much breakage during the retouching process that your hair becomes uneven, you end up having to trim off the inches that you accumulated between touch ups and your hair ends up right back where you started.<br />
<br />
The key problems to look out for and avoid when relaxing:<br />
- Breakage from improper combing. This typically occurs when parting your hair to apply the relaxer or while combing the relaxer through the new growth<br />
- Breakage from overlapping relaxer on previously relaxed hair.<br />
- Improper conditioning and detangling after washing out the relaxer. People often lose gobs of hair during this step of the process.<br />
- Over processing i.e. leaving the relaxer in your hair for too long<br />
<br />
To reduce the chances of any of these happening:<br />
- Make sure your hair is totally tangle free before starting. Detangling requires patience and can be time consuming and hairdressers generally try to attend to as many customers as possible so the chances of a hairdresser spending one hour detangling your hair is slim to none. I therefore strongly suggest that you dangle your hair thoroughly before going to the salon<br />
- Insist on proper conditioning and gentle detangling after washing out the relaxer. Tell your hairdresser to use a generous amount of conditioner to ensure that your hair has slip and can be easily detangled.<br />
- Communicate clearly to your hair dresser and be assertive. I know it can be uncomfortable micro managing your hair dresser but it's your hair and you are a paying customer so if he/she is doing something you are not comfortable with, tell them.<br />
<br />
Let us know how it goes. Especially if you have a good experience. We are in dire need a list of the good salons.<br />
<br />
Thanks for stopping by and best of luck!<br />

<br />
Today, I decided to take a break from my wigs so I moisturized my ends and put my hair up in a bun: My ends are safely tucked away. I haven't relaxed my hair since february so I have about an inch of new growth. This is my do for the week.<br />

Ranging from bad relaxers to heat damage to bad products. Unfortunately, experiencing setbacks while on a healthy hair journey is very common. It is in fact the norm because a healthy hair journey is a learning process where a bit of trial and error is often required. Sometimes you learn from other people's mistakes and sometimes you have to experience it yourself to realize the lesson. When you have a setback, the important thing is to learn from it. What caused it? Was it a bad relaxer? A product that you used? Something you did or something you failed to do? Once you have figured out what caused it, determine how to prevent it from happening again. Then decide on how to address the current situation.<br />
<br />
<br />
Several years ago, I had my roots relaxed by a random hair dresser in Lagos. When she was combing the relaxer through my new growth, she kept pulling so hard on my hair with her fine toothed rattail comb, I am convinced that she obliterated some of my hair follicles. Anyway, the result was a massive headache and enormous damage to the back of my head. I didn't want to cut all my hair off so I grew it out for several months before trimming it.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Second trim</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Needless to say, that was the last time I ever went to that hair dresser. Other causes of setbacks for me include heat damage from weekly flat ironing, knotting from washing tangled hair and thinning from overlapping relaxers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While we are doing everything we can to avoid a setback, if you do find yourself in a situation where you have sustained damage to your hair, I suggest you take the following steps:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Remain calm, try not to be frustrated, anxious or overly emotional</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- If you are emotional, leave your hair alone. Wear a scarf, a wig, hold your hair up in a bun and take a break. Go to the movies, cook something, read a book... anything to keep you from having to deal with your hair.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- When you feel less agitated, inspect your hair to assess the damage</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Do not reach for the scissors! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Put your hair in a protective style for a week or two to give your hair time to recover before making a decision on trimming. This is because sometimes your hair will recover on it's own and the trim may not be necessary or may still be necessary but not in the magnitude you thought.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that no one suffers a setback but if you do let us know your experience in the comments below so we don't suffer the same fate!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Peace, love and light!</div>

<br />
<br />
My sister had this super cute bow bun. It's so adorbs and really easy to do, I thought I'd post a quick tutorial for you ladies on how to achieve this.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Step 1 & 2:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH9S14uuXATKspTmfuIVtFw3vHVXFXUFtGKKAhL8Aykkj9eSTK2ZwhZYlpElV0LhQjpkvgfTN4Q8stLcT_bzdXncnS2vNOvt1Vup88bkpx0znC6JlEZDsRNMkkKhIirJhD6e78CmMvo6hb/s1600/photo-4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH9S14uuXATKspTmfuIVtFw3vHVXFXUFtGKKAhL8Aykkj9eSTK2ZwhZYlpElV0LhQjpkvgfTN4Q8stLcT_bzdXncnS2vNOvt1Vup88bkpx0znC6JlEZDsRNMkkKhIirJhD6e78CmMvo6hb/s320/photo-4.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1. Using a scrunchie, put your hair up in a high ponytail.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can use extensions if necessary. You'll need about 10 inches in length to make a nice looking bun</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2. Fold the ponytail forward and secure with the scrunchie, leaving out about 2 inches of hair (this will form the middle part of the bow)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Step 3 & 4</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZBcpT1iLHmvDyNjHjrADAQ7x6pGZF0Ae-f16wc6HIxr2a_6oT6YhmrdwMt-5cOYk3TMPBVwZDdYxG5scUN1R04-xvuahA_H2EJb8vwbtP8JSl_43XVgGVHyabYb4esfQGad6D12icZzqq/s1600/photo-5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZBcpT1iLHmvDyNjHjrADAQ7x6pGZF0Ae-f16wc6HIxr2a_6oT6YhmrdwMt-5cOYk3TMPBVwZDdYxG5scUN1R04-xvuahA_H2EJb8vwbtP8JSl_43XVgGVHyabYb4esfQGad6D12icZzqq/s320/photo-5.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3. Part the folded ponytail in the middle<br />
<br />
4. Take the piece of hair you left out, fold it backwards in between the 2 sections and secure with a bobby pin.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Step 5</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAwYM-e0peCDrG6AwSTHiCoU-sO5a24wDik30sOP_N76khqxlXA8oafHwiJwrUk-ssMF0N0MYuBmrTR0STtp4VVjoYPwjTW22HWe5fhBa6Tc1Vo-YF4SYPzOSnARyyNgZxZ8sNfmBGXBKE/s1600/photo-7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAwYM-e0peCDrG6AwSTHiCoU-sO5a24wDik30sOP_N76khqxlXA8oafHwiJwrUk-ssMF0N0MYuBmrTR0STtp4VVjoYPwjTW22HWe5fhBa6Tc1Vo-YF4SYPzOSnARyyNgZxZ8sNfmBGXBKE/s320/photo-7.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
5. Fluff out either side of the bow to fill it out and make it look nice and full.<br />
<br />
That's it!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

After spending all that money, we fix/install the extensions. The first month, the hair is bouncy, shiny and swinging. By month 2, it is sort of shiny, not as bouncy and not quite swinging. By month X, the shine, bounce and swing are all gone. With all the money we spent to get these extensions, we expect it to last for ever. Surely, that is not too much to ask? Is it?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHqLuV1IdNFEy5i7tgXHDhX0iaCk5_Va5cioBQF2o2DXZjX3DthRIUyMcUBYZHdt0igxUekLR7I6oBbqAO3Cs7-LpvbBjgvT11fT6NS3amg9le09Knu24p1CsCeXoHNvH5DHF9HCqI7yc0/s1600/tangled.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHqLuV1IdNFEy5i7tgXHDhX0iaCk5_Va5cioBQF2o2DXZjX3DthRIUyMcUBYZHdt0igxUekLR7I6oBbqAO3Cs7-LpvbBjgvT11fT6NS3amg9le09Knu24p1CsCeXoHNvH5DHF9HCqI7yc0/s320/tangled.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
<br />
OK, here is the thing:<br />
<br />
Even high quality extensions if not properly cared for will tangle and trust me, it is not that easy to care for extensions. The weekly conditioning, heat free styling, treatments etc. Who has time for that? So you may find yourself in the situation where you brush your hair in the morning, it looks nice and sleek, but by the time you get to school or the office, it is big, puffy, tangled and out of control. If this happens, don't throw it away and start saving for a new one, don't call the girl that you bought it from and rain abuses on her. All you have to do is bleach bath the extensions and you can restore its shiny, bouncy, swinging form.<br />
<br />
Here is how to go about it:<br />
<br />
What you'll need:<br />
<br />
Household ammonia (if anyone knows where to find this in Lagos or Abuja please let us know in the comments below, gracias)<br />
Clorox bleach (regular, no fragrance)<br />
Shampoo<br />
Conditioner<br />
Hot water<br />
The hair extensions<br />
Rubber gloves<br />
Wide tooth comb (for detangling)<br />
3 Basins (Or you can use your kitchen or bathroom sink)<br />
<br />
The procedure:<br />
<br />
1. Wear the rubber gloves<br />
<br />
2. Detangle the extensions as much as possible using the wide tooth comb and your fingers<br />
<br />
3. Pour some water into the first basin and add a few drops of shampoo. Mix it till there is a bit of a lather<br />
<br />
4. Pour one gallon of hot but not boiling water into the second basin and add 1/4 to 1/2 a cup of clorox bleach to the water<br />
<br />
5. Submerge your extensions into the bleach mixture (2nd basin), then using your wide tooth comb, comb the extensions continuously for 3 mins while keeping it submerged in the mixture<br />
<br />
6. Remove the weave from the mixture, squeeze and dip the extensions in and out of the water and shampoo mixture that you prepared in step 2 for about 1 min<br />
<br />
7. Rinse with water<br />
<br />
8. Pour out the shampoo and make a fresh one<br />
<br />
9. Pour 3 cups of hot water in the 3rd basin and add 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of the household ammonia <br />
<br />
10. Dip the weave in and out of the ammonia mixture continuously for 1 to 2 mins, while still combing through with your wide toothed comb<br />
<br />
11. Dip the weave in and out of the fresh shampoo mixture that you made in step 8<br />
<br />
12. Rinse and condition with your moisturizing conditioner (silicon mix, hello hydration, Vo5 etc)<br />
<br />
13. Rinse<br />
<br />
14. Airdry<br />
<br />
<br />
With these short steps you can take your tangled extensions from this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlPJ6mA0TuHRmjLX9HXOmlrWDIpKvfh3EjhixBRg00g7bt8K9zzoOJ2h5JKiMZjZOsDSN5JZrCpmifv-ychqiD8SHbuSlXbaVNr-3RxQtN7K9dZ6itdVa7l0qiN9Z99VQ2IEbaPNiIho4t/s1600/article-0-195420CA000005DC-45_306x483.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlPJ6mA0TuHRmjLX9HXOmlrWDIpKvfh3EjhixBRg00g7bt8K9zzoOJ2h5JKiMZjZOsDSN5JZrCpmifv-ychqiD8SHbuSlXbaVNr-3RxQtN7K9dZ6itdVa7l0qiN9Z99VQ2IEbaPNiIho4t/s320/article-0-195420CA000005DC-45_306x483.jpg" width="202" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7A5vf2Zxv_O9enVP-d3mNzTgB3hQ5gkfEyLjXdqmldRV4g24s6Od9zENA6uXbrMmwuq1BDiILXGNjU40mm2A5DXRcfFu1psLN1Yp_LAOhORz0yBbxOsTTSP2NHGusrB43qRcalns56Ain/s1600/abynes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7A5vf2Zxv_O9enVP-d3mNzTgB3hQ5gkfEyLjXdqmldRV4g24s6Od9zENA6uXbrMmwuq1BDiILXGNjU40mm2A5DXRcfFu1psLN1Yp_LAOhORz0yBbxOsTTSP2NHGusrB43qRcalns56Ain/s320/abynes.jpg" width="276" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<b>Caution:</b><br />
- DO NOT let the ammonia and bleach come in contact with each other, the resulting fumes could be fatal<br />
<br />
- When bleach bathing your extensions work in a well ventilated area.<br />
<br />
<br />
You can get clorox bleach from pretty much anywhere park and shop, goodies, dream plaza etc. Try to get the regular unscented one. Household ammonia is a cleaning agent so you may find it in the cleaning area of the supermarket.<br />

I am generally not a fan of spending more than 30mins at a time doing my hair so while I love how braids look, committing to the 4-8 hours needed to get box braids put in is a challenge for me. However, I think I am inspired enough to make this commitment. I definitely see box braids in my near future.<br />

Deep conditioning is a very important part of any hair care routine especially hair that has been chemically treated. What is the difference between a deep conditioner and a regular instant conditioner? Well, while an instant conditioner is applied and washed out instantly (hence the name), a deep conditioner is left in for a few minutes to several hours (sometimes even overnight) before being washed out. For a more intensive treatment, you may apply heat to your hair while conditioning. This opens up the cuticle and enables your hair to absorb more nutrients.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Currently, for my deep conditioning treatments, I use the macadamia deep repair masque. I apply the conditioner on towel dried hair, wear a plastic/processing cap and then put on my Gold and Hot conditioning heat cap. </div>

Gone are the days when I had to drag out my very bulky babyliss hooded dryer (see below), go through the cumbersome process of setting it up and then have to bear it's noisiness for the 20mins I sat under it. I now use the gold and hot heating cap which is portable, fits easily in my suitcase, is easy to set up (actually, there is no 'setup' needed, you basically just put it on, plug it into a power outlet and wait for it to heat up). It is also silent, so while conditioning your hair, you can watch tv, have conversation, listen to music and generally engage in any activity to requires you to use your ears!</div>

<br />
I am not sure where you can get this heating cap in Lagos and/or Abuja but I am on the look out and once I have some info on where you can get it, I will update this post and let you know. That said, a good alternate to using a heating cap is using your body heat. To do this, wear a processing/plastic cap (see below) and then wrap your towel over it. This will trap your body heat and will have the same effect as a heating cap. Leave for 30 - 45mins and then rinse out. You can also get some additional heat by dipping the towel in hot water before wrapping around your head.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you don't have processing caps, you can use a plastic bag. Those little black ones work well. Just tie them around your head to prevent any dripping and then wrap a towel round it.</div>
<br />
Notice how soft and pliable your hair is after you rinse out the conditioner? That's the best part.<br />
