Castor oil for hair growth

When it comes to recovering from hair loss and stimulating growth, castor oil may very well be awarded "magic potion" status. Castor oil is known to heal follicle damage that may occur due to improper weave application, tight cornrows, high tension braids etc. It also stimulates healthy follicles resulting in faster growth. Its anti-fungal, anti-bacterial properties help maintain a healthy scalp which again is necessary for optimal hair growth.

For hair loss:

See below pictures of Loice, a young lady whose hairline was damaged from improper styling. She is now well on the way to reclaiming her hairline using a castor oil based routine. Read her story  here

Here is another young lady who is also seeing results by applying jamaican black castor oil regularly to her edges.

For hair growth:

Some participants of the castor oil challenge held on the hairlista and kinkycoilyme websites showed significant growth over the 3 month duration of the challenge. See pictures below:

That is a looot of growth for 3 months!

How it works:
- First of all, you need to get your hands on some castor oil. Some people insist on jamaican black castor oil (jbco), but in my opinion, any castor oil will do. You will typically find it at the pharmacy in the laxative section (yep, castor oil is a laxative when taken orally). You can find the cold pressed castor oil in most pharmacies in Lagos and jbco here

Jamaican black castor oil

Cold pressed castor oil

- The second step it to apply it to your scalp 3 times a week. Some people apply it to the hair as well but due to the thickness of the oil, I don't recommend this for people with relaxed hair.  In any case, castor oil works by increasing blood flow to the scalp and supplying the hair follicles with nutrients. So for hair growth, the important thing is to apply it to your scalp.

- The last step is to... wait. Hair growth is 50% effort and 50% patience.

Has anyone tried castor oil for hair growth? What was your experience? What kind of castor oil did you use and how did you use it?

xoxo

  3. Hello :), I just decided to go natural and am always on braids. Pls advice is it okay to relax only the roots once in 6months or more?? Also would get the castor oil today.. Mj

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, relaxing every 6 months is fine if you are protective styling and not combing or manipulating your hair frequently. Hair is susceptible to breakage where the new growth meets the relaxed hair so If you are not protective styling then you should relax more frequently (once every 2 - 3months) to prevent breakage.

My sister actually used 'constipation' one from the pharmacy aisle but just as coconut oil and sheabutter are for cooking, they can be used for hair if 100% natural.

  6. It works great especially for the hair line. I've used both jbco and normal (cold-pressed 100%). I stopped for a while and regretted it.

Now I add tea-tree oil to my castor oil scalp mix.

  11. Hi Bassey,

How are you? It's been ages!
Maybe you can give me the encouragement I need ~ I practically shaved my hair a while back because I was sick and tired of permed hair! I don't want to go back to perming, I want my natural hair (& quite long too).
The problem is my kinky hair is tooo tough, tangled and quite an amazon. You know the type that can break the fingers of a poor guy trying to run his fingers through!

I am not giving up! I am going to start growing it natural again, so my request:
    1) What do I use to give my hair a natural soft texture from the roots?
2)If it did grow long, it would be a massive afro, how do I get it to sit without perming?
    3) Lastly, what you say about what I can use to get that "waist length" :)

Hope to hear from you soon.
    Lotsa luv

    1. Hi Titi,
1.Keeping natural hair well conditioned and moisturized is the best way to make it nice and soft. Just make sure to deep condition and moisturize your hair properly and frequently.
      2. Yeah, it would most likely be a massive fro but there are lots of ways to style natural hair. You can also blow dry and flat iron it to get it straight, you don't need to relax it.
      3. As for waistlength, you already know what to do. Just add patience to the equation. With the right care, the only other thing you need is patience! You'll get to waistlength in no time.
      Best of luck!

    2. Please explain deep conditioning.
I think the problem I have is in the application process (adding the oils, etc. What I mean is my hair is tooo tightly coiled and kinky so I get fed up easily trying to comb it,... I give up in the process.
I actually tried the nigerian matting (didi) for a while because I heard it softens hair,... didn't work!
Do you have any recommendations for moisturizing and conditioning products, I can always look for the JBCO here in nigeria. Then I'll combine all this with the flat iron.

      Thanks

    4. Twotees...I have hair like yours. Tight, dry, kinky, easy breakage, and no definition. Patience, patience, patience is the key. Youtube hair care for 4c and 4b hair. Thats what helped me. Schedule an appt with yourself to do your hair and set aside 4 hours. Kinky tight hair is very fragile and will break if managed impropely. Use cream base moisturizers and know that water doesn't help. Wash anf goes not work on kinky hair, so learn how to do a twist out. Take this time to learn and imbrace your hair. Lenght comes with time, and focus on health, strong, and managable hair. Wash your hair once a month with a shampoo and learn to co-wash. Do protective styles. Youtube, youtube, youtube.

    5. Whatever your hairtype is, your hair should never be dry. I it is then you are doing something wrong.
I use water daily and it moisturized my hair by itself many times. Matter fact water is number one when it comes to moisturizing hair. Just check the ingredient list on many products.

I used to watch YT tutorials all time in the beginning of my journey and almost nun worked. I had to modify alot and find what works for me. I thought that my hair was 4b 4c but now it's 4a -c , 3 hair types. I have changed alot of the things I do.
Yes 4 hairtype takes alot of patience but no one is like the other. It's all about finding what suits and works for your hair.
Wash n go did work on me once but it wasn't by my intention, I wanted to get my hair slick... I bought that gel after seeing a tutorial from someone with the same hairtype.
Its wrong if you to tell someone what to do just because you have the same hairtype. I'm just saying.
I cowash every week and shampoo every 3-4 months and that works for me. I do AVC weekly when in protective styles.
It's all about trial and failure and patience.
I do LOC and GHE weekly and that has helped alot with moisture retention for me

  22. Hello, I started my hair challenge on Monday 26th August, 2013, with my hair length at my nape. I m using VO5 clarifying shampoo and the VO5 moisturizing conditioner. I started by washing my hair, conditioning it, and deep conditioning it with Organics hair mayionnaise. I also applied castor oil to my scalp n edges, my edges re thinning. Now my end is in an updo bun. I plan to get a wig by the end of the month. My roots haven't been touched up for two months, I am aiming at a four month stretch for a start. What kind of protective styling can i use during these stretches. Also how long can I go on a particular cornrow style before it is recommended that I take them down? I am assuming that I will be moisturizing every other day throughout my relaxes stretch.

  28. Hello ladies (and gents) I would just like to give you all a little recipe that WORKS WONDERS. Hair companies don't want us to believe all this because it would mean they go broke. Coconut oil, castor oil, avocado oil, olive oil and some blobs of shea butter. place all together in a mixing bowl, sit that in a pan of shallow water and let the oils WARM NOT BOIL so that it is all pliable. (Use as much of each oil as you like, common sense implemented here would be good as you know how much you need according to hair volume and length Also try to use organic of each ingredient). Dampen hair with warm water and then CAREFULLY take the bowl out of the pan and apply the mixture to your scalp and lengths. Massage in. Wear an old top as the mixture may drip so get an old towel out too and do it in the bathroom, if possible. Then cover with shower cap and let it sit for minimum four hours. This is because SCIENTIFICALLY oil's molecular structure makes it take a while to bend and penetrate your hair's shaft in order to get deep into the cortex and the same goes for the follicles (roots). The dampness helps create steam under the cap and this deeply moisturises the hair, thus strengthening it and helping it get longer due to LESS BREAKAGE. So not only is root care vital but keeping the hair healthy is too so that it doesn't break off. When you shampoo the mixture out, use a sulphate free shampoo and you can clarify with apple cider vinegar which restores the PH balance and removes oily build-up which can also damage hair roots and the hair itself, also leading to breakage. The apple cider vinegar is only necessary once a month, thoroughly. (Pour a capful into a large cup of warm water and pour over hair. Ignore the smell. No pain no gain. Repeat and leave for five minutes then rinse and condition. (do it in between shampoo and conditioner). This regime (pre shampoo oiling of hair)should be done three times a week for hair growth and once a week/every two weeks for maintenance. Works for ALL textures of hair and races. DO YOUR RESEARCH PEOPLE! You can vary the ingredients according to your hair type. Neem oil is good for oily hair and scalps. Lemon added is good for shine for ALL hair types, although not recommended often for dry hair. Rosemary oil, a few drops, also stimulates root growth and promotes shine. Honey is a wonderful moisturiser but better suited if you don't mind VERY GRADUAL, MINOR AND SAFE LIGHTENING OF THE HAIR. It enhances honey tones in blonde hair (even afro blonde dyed hair) and black tea enhances tones in dark hair - left to brew and cold and then poured over hair and left for twenty minutes). I have tightly coiled hair and my hair is in abundance due to the original mixture mentioned. After washing and conditioning, moisturise, oil then wear a protective style and let your hair air dry naturally. Don't brush when wet, leave it alone, have patience and TRUST me, your hair will grow like crazy. Diet plays a part too; lots of protein, B vitamins, Vitamin C, Iron and Zinc and Hey Presto - Move over Rapunzel. I love you all ladies (and gents!) and I know what it's like growing hair back after cutting it off/a hair disaster. Try my tips and see for yourself. May God bless you all people. Over and Out. A friend who knows what she's talking about!

  29. Hey... Does over application on the 1st time and keeping d oil overnight in hair.. affects in a negative way?..

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, leaving oil on overnight or lots of the mixture does not affect hair in a negative way once thoroughly removed/shampooed out afterwards. You will not see the benefit if you do not wash out thoroughly. (Shiny, supple hair, clean scalp which means healthy hair growth). Oily build up which can damage hair refers to natural hair's oil and applied hair oil as a dressing and left for weeks on end, which was at one time seen as healthy but is not as it attracts dirt and clogs follicles and clogged skin leads to spots because of all the dead skin sitting on top - scalp is skin too! Hair needs to 'breathe' (so to speak) too so keep it clean and fresh not caked in grease and oil which actually breaks hair anyway - go research. You do not have to wash hair excessively/too often however, as this is also bad for the hair and scalp. It requires common sense and knowledge of what is good for you; through trial and error/experimenting/taking note of how hair responds to different treatment, is how many people learn. I wash my hair once a week and that is good enough for me. I would say no more than twice a week (I am talking to afro curly haired girls, once a week or every two weeks is even better but I exercise and sweat can break hair so once a week should be sufficient). Happy hair growing! PS: To Poetry Inclined: The different oils do different stuff - Castor oil and Coconut the best for healthy hair growth, Shea butter is good for the actual hair, moisturising and softening and also protective - I smother it on damp hair before swimming and before my swimming cap goes on as it is great at repelling the chlorine but too much swimming regardless of the shea butter is a no-no! Just a good thing to remember during summer if you really want to take a dip in that pool or Sea, even without the actual cap.

IT NEVER CROSSES OUR MIND THAT THESE OLD PARENTS CAN STILL GET ON WHENEVER THEY LIKE. DO YOU KNOW THAT WHEN AN OLD MAN REALIZE HE IS FREE FROM CHILDREN BEARING, HE BECOMES PROMISCUOUS AND THEY ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO ALL KINDS OF DISEASES. BUT THE OLD WOMAN IS CONFINED TO A CORNER IN THE HOUSE, SO THEY PAY MORE MONEY TO WHO SO EVER IS READY TO MINGLE WITH THEM.

    1. My hair is a bit drier than it was when I was younger (im 45+). I also live in a very dry climate in western Colorado which also contributes to the dryness of my hair. I use the Shielo Restore Oil because its perfect for making my hair soft and moist again. I have short hair so I only use a small amount on my fingers and spread it through all of my hair. I can shower twice a day when necessary and if I use the Shielo Oil, my hair does not dry out. I like the result!
